Not too long ago I was talking with another writer who expressed one of the most common insecurities of new writers that I know. Reading good books. Reading a well-crafted book can be quite discouraging, that common response is "I can't write anything like this!" It it is much easier to be inspired by reading a badly written book. Who among us hasn't declared - "I can write something better than that!"
I agree, it can be tough for a writer when you read great authors. You almost can't help but compare yourself to them. So what do you do? First of all, keep reading. Good books are an inspiration as you realize how many great voices are out there. Next, don't compare yourself. Your voice is your own and there is room for it! Lastly, don't be afraid to grow and change your voice. Just like a singer continues to practice and listen to other singers to learn their techniques and "try them on", writers have to continue to practice and try on other voices to see what works for them. Don't copy your favorite writers, but let them influence you to become the best you can be.
October - this is going to be a great month for writers!
